By reading this article, I assume that you have seen Marvel Studios’ Thor: The Dark World (AKA Thor 2). If you haven’t, you obviously have no regard for spoilers spoiling your moviegoing experience… because if you do NOT want to be spoiled you will stop reading… NOW.

OK, clear?

Volstagg and Lady Sif Thor the Dark World End Credits

After the cool end credits sequence, we get the customary Marvel Studios end-credits extra which is the first of two for this movie. In the scene, Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) and Lady Sif (Jamie Alexander) bring some sort of artifact to a entity referred to as the Collector (Benecio Del Toro). They mention something about the Tesseract being in Asgard and keeping this artifact away from it. After the Warriors Two leave, the Collector makes some sort of sinister monologue about having “one down, five to go”.

So what did all of it mean?

Well, this looks like it is going to tie into the next Marvel Studios movies, of course. The character of the Collector will appear in the upcoming movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”, and no doubt he is trying to assemble the Infinity Gems to be placed in the Infinity Gauntlet, which was previously seen in the first Thor movie. It seems the Tesseract is one of the gems, and this red thing is another of the gems. If we are going by straight colors, it seems the Collector now has the “Power” Gem,with the location of the Mind Gem now known to him.

This is a cool chart that I found here.

The Collector Thor the Dark World

For a bit of commentary on the scene, I think it felt strange. It was a bit more sci-fi than the rest of the movie had been, even with the inclusion of laser guns, implosion grenades and spaceships in the Dark Elves’ arsenal. It felt like an episode of Doctor Who… and while I LOVE Doctor Who, it still just felt… off to me.

That being said, I really liked the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and I guess this looks like that. I just wasn’t expecting it in a Thor movie.

The biggest question for me is if the Collector doing this for his own ends or for Thanos, who we saw at the end of the Avengers?
